Description

For centuries, institutions only offered classical music training. However, with the advancement of technology, the recording and distribution of music has become the center of this art form. Accordingly, the job market of the music industry has expanded in a range of fields from law to finance. Major cities like New York City and Los Angeles have started offering music production and artist management programs in their institutions, but most collegiate music programs still lack these music industry essentials in their major offerings. Similarly, James Madison University only offers concentrations in the music industry with most of the curriculum dedicated to the school of music’s classical music courses. An aspiring singer-songwriter, Shukrana Shukrullah set out to utilize the school's offerings in music industry courses without being bounded by their classical program's requirements. To meet her interests, she designed her own major through the university’s Independent Scholars Program. In this presentation, Shukrana describes how she uses her self-designed major at JMU to study courses in music industry, including law and audio production, and business to gain the necessary skill-sets and knowledge for a successful career in the music industry.
