Abstract
In Expanding Approaches to Thematic Analysis, editors Jennifer R. Wolgemuth, Kelly W. Guyotte, and Stephanie Anne Shelton introduce an expansive, paradigm-shifting book that reimagines thematic analysis beyond conventional coding methods. This edited volume begins with two presumptions: (1) there are multiple methods of theming data, and (2) qualitative researchers are not necessarily required to code to achieve themes. Through the convergence of various qualitative researchers and early-career scholars, this edited collection pushes thematic analysis into new epistemological territories. The 18 chapters of the book reveal new techniques, such as meditative theming, poetic analysis, and making art, underpinned by theoretical heterogeneity and dense methodological thought. The book starts with root chapters criticizing the limitations of coding-based techniques and moves toward focus on storytelling a wide scope of rival techniques such as annotation, diagramming, meditative analysis, poetry, and autoethnographic reflection. Several of the chapters end with "Methodologies in Action" brief narratives by graduate students and early researchers who tested these new methods in their own research. Drawing on diverse theory traditions feminist theory, poststructuralism, hermeneutics, mindfulness, and contemplative research the book shows that topics can be fashioned not only procedurally via coding but through the arts, through the body, through reflection, and through resonance. The outcome is a necessary contribution to the qualitative research conversation engaged with creativity, reflexivity, and data-researcher embedded. The review considers the book's academic strengths, methodological concerns, and applicability for higher education scholars committed to reflexive and critical research.
