Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the development and resulting product of a collaborative industry-academia engineering management and industrial engineering workforce development strategy. In the spring of 2017, Old Dominion University's (ODU) Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department (EMSE) approached Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) with a concept to develop an educational initiative to support the preparation and development of the future workforce. The concept came to fruition over the next two years as a certification program in Engineering Systems and Industrial Engineering for NNS working professionals. This paper examines the primary aspects of the development of the certification program. Emphasis was placed on how the program was tailored to meet the needs of industry and working professionals. Thus, the focus of this paper was targeted to the development process and strategy. In addition, the initial results of the program were examined, including modifications that were made to support student success in the classroom. Furthermore, the details associated with adapting the program based on the changing needs of industry were also explored. The paper concludes with lessons learned based on the program's execution and associated results.
