Replacing Negative Behaviors: The Effect of an Educational Intervention on Adolescent Usage of Coping Skills
Description/Abstract/Artist Statement
Our group of Old Dominion University (ODU) nursing students have spent numerous hours each week at the site of Teens With a Purpose (TWP) located in Norfolk, Virginia. Teens with a Purpose (TWP) is a non- profit organization that offers afterschool and weekend programs for Hampton Roads adolescents with the purpose of youth empowerment and engagement. The ‘teens’ attending TWP are between the ages of 12 and 18 years old and come from middle and high schools in Norfolk that are typically underserved in regards to funding and after school activities. Over the course of the two semesters, we evaluated specific health needs of our aggregate, the teens, and planned specific and appropriate interventions to implement. This poster will discuss the identified health problems, interventions, implementation, and evaluation of our education regimen. To address these stressors that were identified, TWP collaborated with ODU nursing students to design an intervention to empower these adolescents to cope with these obstacles through teaching related to positive coping skills.
