Teaching classical Indian dances is drastically different today when compared to the past due to an increase in multicultural education. Given the complex nature of classical dances and the lack of cultural background many students show, instructors now face the challenge of identifying innovative pedagogy to teach students in non-traditional environments outside of India. This presentation discusses key concepts in the classical dance education field, such as the guru-shishya parampara, multicultural learning environments, and didactics. Common methods and shortcomings in existing studies are highlighted to establish the need for further research, from which the presentation outlines a proposal for a detailed study. The research questions will explore how Indian classical dance teachers in Northern Virginia modify their teaching to meet the learning needs of high school students in a modern environment and what effect the identified adaptive pedagogy has on students’ cultural understanding and dance knowledge.
