Description

The concepts of campaign strategy, split-ticket voting, repeat congressional candidacies, and nonpartisan elections were employed to understand how down-ballot Republican and Republican-endorsed candidates performed compared to President Trump in the Commonwealth of Virginia. For example, the vote totals in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District for President and Congress were examined to determine if President Trump or Scott Taylor performed better. The vote totals in Virginia Beach for President and Mayor were examined to determine if President Trump or Mayor Bobby Dyer performed better. An analysis of the 2020 Election in Virginia is significant as it is important to have a basic level of understanding of politics throughout the Commonwealth. Analyzing the Hampton Roads region allows for an opportunity to learn about the 2020 election results in a competitive location within the Commonwealth.
