The Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration Editorial Staff is comprised of the Executive and Chief Editor, one or more Associate Editors, one or more Assistant Editors, one or more Manuscript Editors, and a multitude of Reviewers. The rigor of JHSSIC is rooted in the blind peer-review process, as well as the considerable scholarly requirements of each Editorial Staff position.

The Executive and Chief Editor oversees the workings of the Journal in an executive manner. They manage every submitted manuscript and distribute them to Associate Editors, Assistant Editors, and Reviewers for feedback. They communicate with all staff and Authors to convey feedback and progress the editing process toward publication. They may provide feedback to authors in addition to feedback from Reviewers and Associate Editors.

The Chief Editor has:

  1. an earned doctoral degree in a helping or associated field,
  2. at least ten peer-reviewed publications in print,
  3. significant knowledge of the peer review and journal publication process,
  4. previous experience as an editor (e.g., Associate Editor),
  5. previous experience on a journal review board (i.e., reviewing manuscripts), and
  6. substantial knowledge about human services and interprofessional collaboration.

Associate Editors work under the Executive Chief Editor and manage a load of manuscripts each issue. They work with an Assistant Editor to compile evaluations from reviewers to write decision letters to authors. They provide their own feedback in each letter. Once submissions are in the revise and submit stage, the Associate Editors communicate with authors throughout the revision process to guide them toward a publishable manuscript.

Associate Editors have:

  1. an earned doctoral degree in a helping or associated field,
  2. at least five peer-reviewed publications in print,
  3. knowledge of the peer-review and journal publication process,
  4. previous experience on a journal review board (i.e., reviewing manuscripts), and
  5. knowledge about human services and interprofessional collaboration.

Assistant Editors assist the Execute Chief Editor and Associate Editors with compiling reviews for decision letters. They are under the supervision of the Chief Editor or an Associate Editor as part of the mentoring process. They may conduct manuscript editing and formatting tasks for publication.

Assistant Editors have:

  1. an earned graduate degree (master’s) in a helping or associated field,
  2. knowledge of the peer-review process,
  3. experience reviewing manuscripts.

Manuscript Editors assist the Chief Editor and Associate Editors with thorough reviews of accepted manuscripts for APA 7 compliance, grammar, Microsoft Word formatting, and accuracy of references. They cross check references and put each manuscript through a plagiarism check.

Manuscript Editors have:

  1. an earned graduate degree (master’s or doctoral) in a helping or associated field, and
  2. extensive knowledge of writing mechanics, APA 7, Microsoft Word, and the research process.

Reviewers are a diverse group of professionals from institutions across the country with backgrounds in helping and associated fields. Reviewers demonstrate an understanding of the field of human services, other helping fields, and interprofessional collaboration. They complete an evaluation form and provide a page of written feedback to authors for manuscript improvement. They also suggest acceptance, revise and resubmit, or decline decisions. Reviewers are assigned based on their areas of expertise and evaluate 2-3 manuscripts per year.

Reviewers have:

  1. an earned doctoral degree in a helping or associated field,
  2. at least three peer-reviewed publications in print, and
  3. knowledge of the peer-review process.

Ad hoc Reviewers perform the same duties as Reviewers above, but under the supervision of the Chief Editor or an Associate Editor as part of the mentoring process. The goal is to prepare them for scholarly pursuits by teaching them the unique skills of peer-review.

Ad hoc Reviewers have:

  1. an earned graduate degree (master’s or doctoral) in a helping or associated field,
  2. experience writing manuscripts for publication,
  3. knowledge of the peer-review process.

Advisory Board

The JHSSIC Advisory Board is comprised of human services researchers and professionals with expertise in interprofessional and interdisciplinary research and practice. Its role is to review each semi-annual publication of the Journal and provide feedback and recommendations to the Editorial Board on presentation and quality of the Journal and its published articles.
