Speaking Green with a Southern Accent: Environmental Management and Innovation in the South
2010Gerald Andrews Emison (Editor) and John C. Morris (Editor)
The nation's environmental policy approaches and methods are becoming more flexible and diverse, with state governments composing the fulcrum of policy changes. Southern environmental politics and policy are especially valuable when considering a changing environmental policy landscape because they present a contradiction of caution and innovation. This caution derives from the South's well-documented traditional culture while this innovation crosses geographical, pollution media, and intergovernmental levels. Environmental protection in the South must take this paradox into account if progress is to be successful. This book studies Southern environmental policy and politics in order to understand the concrete realities of the Southeast and extend those realities' understanding to other regions of the country. It analyzes a series of cases that describe the state of environmental policy implementation and management in the South. These case studies cover a range of environmental areas, including air quality, drinking water and wastewater, brownfields, collaborative environmental management, and environmental justice, among others. These cases explore the diversity and flexibility which compose the dominant characters of environmental management today. [From Amazon.com]

America for Sale: How the Foreign Pack Circled and Devoured Esmark
2009Craig T. Bouchard and James V. Koch
America for Sale recaps the amazing, sometimes incredible events leading up to the sale of Esmark, including intense pressure from the United Steelworkers and the company's major public shareholder to make a decision not in the best interest of all shareholders. It also analyzes the efforts by the Esmark board of directors to observe its fiduciary duty, details the company's "poison pill" effort to raise its sales price, and describes the actions of Leo Gerard and Ron Bloom of the United Steelworkers Union―which led to some surprising alliances. The authors―one Esmark's president and vice chairman of the board, the other an Esmark director, preeminent American economist, and former university president―then provide their own assessment of the Esmark story. They offer legislative and policy prescriptions aimed at making sure U.S. business doesn't devolve into one big garage sale to foreigners seeking to take advantage of the coming decline of the U.S. dollar. Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality
2008James L. Fisher and James V. Koch
Books, magazine articles, and educational programs on entrepreneurship are all based on the idea that anyone can be an entrepreneur―that entrepreneurs are made, not born. Well, maybe not. In a study of 234 CEOs funded by the Kauffman Foundation, James L. Fisher and James V. Koch came up with a surprising conclusion: Some individuals are simply more naturally fitted to become entrepreneurs than others. They are pre-wired. Because of heredity, some people are much more likely to become successful entrepreneurs or pursue entrepreneurial strategies within a corporate setting profitably. By recognizing that, this book will significantly improve corporate selection processes, strengthen entrepreneurship programs, and boost the confidence of aspiring entrepreneurs through invaluable insights.
Among other things, Fisher and Koch show that true entrepreneurs not only see the world differently―they act differently. Compared with corporate managers, for example, they are more confident, more decisive, more likely to upset the apple cart, and more energetic. They love to compete but are notable for the partnerships they are able to fashion with friend and foe alike. Such conclusions are remarkable. Why? Because they are based on the only empirical comparison study yet conducted on entrepreneurship. The insights are not based on personal opinion or case studies but on valid and reliable personality indicators. [From Amazon.com]

Ethics and the Internal Auditor: 20 Years Later
2004Mortimer A. Dittenhofer and Douglas E. Ziegenfuss
During the decade since Ethics and the Internal Auditor, much has transpired, especially during the last four years. The widespread evidence of chicanery and fraud on the part of corporate officers and the instances of a lack of ethics and professional conduct on the part of external auditors bring the subject of ethics to immediate attention and interest. The conclusion of the second survey (1994) of the field of internal auditing was that there was, "...considerable change in the attitudes of internal auditors," and that, "Generally it appears that the change is pointed toward a more strict approach and a tendency on the part of more auditors to believe that more drastic actions should be taken." Also, there continued to be a "modest variance" between the auditors' positions and the positions they perceived their organizations would take. [Amazon.com]
